BOXED TOO, a continuation of BOXED, was realized for a solo show at Derek Eller Gallery, New York. The conception of the individual works and their installational integration by means of the continuous horizon running along the walls of the real space remain the same. Three of the sheets already exhibited at Örebro showing the rope motif were integrated into this new installation. The works newly created for this exhibition primarily elaborate on the confabulatory aspect of the open charcoal drawing. Varying and increasingly fantastic figures were projected into the predefined block of the illusionistic spatial box, whose clearly defined boundaries suggest a page from a book. The technique of charcoal drawing, especially in combination with the positive-negative inversion of drawing into the charcoal ground with a vacuum cleaner, allows for rapid and fluent work with many corrections and superimpositions. These technological conditions are not presented in isolation as the fetishes of a media-specific self-reflection; rather, the works draw on their (in turn specific) ability to engender illusion. This illusive potential is here extended into the realm of invention and narrative. The charcoal dust locked into the box takes the shape of a many-armed platypus battling a globe; a landscape of clouds with candy canes and flying potatoes and testicles; a hybrid creature between polyp and plucked chicken making a curtsy; or a magical tree whose roots we see from below through the suddenly vitreous spatial box.
