mixed media on paper on aluminum, 70 drawings
various sizes

Paolo Maria Deanesi Gallery, Rovereto, IT

The series takes up the motif of the illusionistic painted frame (see alle anderen, ; "Desillusionierungen. Zum Problem des Rahmens"). The thin aluminum sheets, some of which are coated with paper, are mounted flush on the wall. The depth of the frames that let the pictures rise from the wall as slim rectangular solids has been created by means of parallel projection, which addresses different angles of view, none of them orthogonal to the pictorial surface, in a discontinuous series. Within the illusionary frame, the picture, generating an illusion in the opposite direction, opens toward a space that can be regarded as a recess in the wall. The works visually prize open the safe whose door real pictures can be used to conceal. Each of the 70 drawings, mounted on the wall as a chain, reveals a single object that might be safeguarded and hidden in the safe. This play of showing and concealing, which is part of the structure of pictures, relates ironically to the matrix of private property. The pictorial object, which is shown but does not exist, has taken the place of the object of possession, which is hidden from view.
