DRÜBEN
2007
drawing:installation, wall drawing, mixed media on paper
4.5 x 15 m
Heidelberger Kunstverein, Heidelberg, DE
The installation of drawings entitled DRÜBEN was realized as a contribution to the group exhibition Ob ich das sehe. Installed on the large wall at the Heidelberg Kunstverein—a gallery facing it provides an elevated vantage point—is a combination of paper and wall-mounted works: six large drawings on wide and very long sheets of paper that show elevated seats ranging from a lifeguard’s or umpire’s high chair to a hunting stand. These structures, of varying height, stand in front of a continuous low horizon above which a monochrome blue sky rises that throws the elevated seats into precise relief. In front of them, framing elements measuring 160 cm (63 in) in height extend from the left edge to the right edge of each sheet; their bottom edges are aligned with those of the images slightly above the (real) floor. With wire mesh attached to them, they form a continuous fence. As a group, the drawings, which measure between 250 and 450 cm (98 and 177 in) in height, are framed by a coat of paint on the wall that reprises the azure color of their backgrounds but is separated from it by a margin of 10 cm (4 in). This blue area, which ends 50 cm (20 in) below the ceiling, extends, to the right of the drawings, above the glass entrance door, integrating it into the installation. The remaining section of the wall to the right of the door bears two fence elements on paper without elevated seats; on the very left, a similar section of fencing concludes the installation.
