The drawing installation conceived for a double show (together with Monika Kapfer) at Galerie Royal ruptures the boundary between pictorial space and real space, a demarcation addressed in many works, primarily through the motifs of the fence and the door. Eight large-scale works on paper show doors made of slats of the sort familiar from animal pens and basement compartments; similar wooden structures were materially realized in other installations (nachbarn, r wie räuber, doors, die stummen/die tauben/die blinden) and have frequently served as support structures for drawings. The grain of the wood has been transferred from real wood onto the paper by means of frottage; the addition of drawn demarcations articulates the material into slats. The doors, which are so similar that they might well all be the same one, are slightly open, having been swung into the space of the white sheet. In six of the eight works, abstract drawings and empty sheets of paper have been laminated onto the frottage. They can be read as applied to the wood of the door, i.e., as located in its precarious spatial depth; but also as attached to the surface of the paper, i.e., as located on the threshold to the real space.
A wall was inserted before the front wall of the room, which contains windows, in order to close the real space. Monika Kapfer selected the yellow wall paint.
