These four doors or crate walls were realized for the inaugural exhibition at the new home of Derek Eller Gallery, New York. (In the end, only two could be shown in the exhibition.) The boards are drawn on firm drawing paper, onto which sheets of tissue paper bearing frottages of wood grain are pasted. In several places, a blue background can be seen through the cracks between the vertical boards of the doors, so that they would seem to lock the beholder in rather than out. Laminated onto the feigned planks are additional pieces on tissue paper: moiré patterns and laughing faces, drawn in a variety of graphic styles, that are sometimes superimposed on one another or interpenetrate: a cascade of laughing eyes and mouths.
