Printing is employed here to take the work on semitransparent layers and superimpositions that had begun with geisterbahn one step further. The layers that there constitute the phantoms in the pictorial space are here released from the ties of the pictorial illusion. The subject of superimposition is rendered explicit in the technique of printmaking. Each of the lithographs is printed using several stones in different colors. The printing process is used as a means to combine prefabricated pictorial elements that can still be disentangled in the resulting picture. Realized on eleven sheets of vat paper, each of which is printed on both sides, are thus the ungefähr zweiundzwanzig (roughly twenty-two) lithographs; like filmic images, they share pieces of their figurative identities, ‘overlapping,’ as it were, on the level of content. Inserted between the lithographic sheets are ten silkscreen prints on transparent foils of a drawing that, as a removable additional layer, mixes with the particular lithograph underneath. The color used in the silkscreen prints follows a gradation from white to black so that the drawing grows increasingly more visible against the ground of the lithographs. The pictorial inventory of the portfolio is thus set in explicit relation to the performance of turning the sheets, of sequential beholding, which sets the ‘film’ of the figurative elements, between the pictures and across the boundaries between them, in motion.
